GI Bill and Military Education
GI BILL FOR SELECTED RESERVE
Just like its counterpart for veterans and active duty military, The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB - SR) benefits the military men and women enrolled in the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and the Army and Air National Guard.
If you're eligible, you can use the MGIB-SR towards any degree programs, certificate or correspondence courses, cooperative training, independent study programs, apprenticeship/on-the-job training, and vocational flight training programs. Even certain remedial, refresher and deficiency training courses may be applicable.
Under the MGIB-SR, you may receive up to 36 months of education benefits, with tuition payments sent directly from the VA to your learning institution.
The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB - SR) is for you if:
- You have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985. If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation. For some types of training, it is necessary to have a six-year commitment that begins after September 30, 1990.
- You have completed your initial active duty for training (IADT).
- You had a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT.
- You remained in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit.
If your Reserve or National Guard unit was deactivated during the period October 1, 1991, through September 30, 1995, or you were involuntarily separated (e.g., reduction in force) from Reserve or National Guard service during this same period, you are still eligible for MGIB - SR benefits for a 14 year eligibility period.
You're also eligible for MGIB - SR benefits if you were discharged from Selected Reserve service due to a disability that was not caused by misconduct. Your eligibility period may even be extended if you are ordered to active military duty.
Your benefit entitlement from the Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve ends 14 years from the date of your eligibility, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.
So - 14 can go by fast - don't let your opportunity to take advantage of your Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve; because an investment in your education will continue for pay off, indefinitely. Invest in yourself by applying for your Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve benefits and add more value to your future, starting today.
